Tisdale haunts entire balloting process
Eliminating the Tisdale from my album ballot didn't get her out of my head, since (for example) I'd be listening to M.I.A.'s Kala and saying "Yes, this is nice, but Ashley Tisdale has three tracks on her album that are better than any track on your album." So Ashley Tisdale haunts the balloting process.

With fifty minutes to go before lists and comments are due at Idolator, this is where I am with my album list:

Travis Tritt and Rihanna in for sure, Gogol Bordello and A.R.E. Weapons out. The Gogols actually have a track that can compete with the three Tisdales, and Eugene has finally found the beauty in his bellow, but still, not enough other great songs, though the alb is a joyous thing. A.R.E. also have a track that can play with the Tiz Woman - "Have You Ever?" - and have moments of excellent turdrat throwing, but need to be on target more.

So this leaves Vanessa Carlton, M.I.A., Jordan Pruitt, LeAnn Rimes, John Anderson, The Veronicas, Brooks & Dunn, Gretchen Wilson, and Ashley Monroe fighting for the last three spots. I've got a pretty good idea how it'll turn out (have posted preliminary results already, but not locked them), but I'm not going to tell you, since I want there to be at least some surprises. The Veronicas have strong songs but sound like the Veronicas, the rest have fewer strong songs but don't sound like the Veronicas. Jordan Pruitt might be at an advantage since she's someone who can sound good on mediocre material. However, the youthfulness of her voice makes her sound young, which she is. I'm still mad at the world for shunning Gretchen Wilson now that she's got better songs than previously and is singing them with actual subtlety; so she might be the beneficiary of revenge voting. Carlton warm and sweet if somewhat dippy. M.I.A. can't sing way more than Paris Hilton can't sing, and unlike Paris hasn't found a way to make her vocals beautiful anyway; but the dryness of M.I.A.'s voice is counteracted at least somewhat by the overall force of her beats and her omnivorish hunting and gathering of sounds, and also a suddenly awesome sense of the gorgeous. LeAnn of course is a monster singer, like Jordan can carry the load when the songwriting stumbles. Brooks & Dunn have found a way to sound light and easy above some deep swampy grooves; John Anderson sounds smart and chewy above grooves that go 2-step and rock and funk, best vocalist ever to work with John Rich.

Oh, and if anyone has suggestions as to whom I should vote for for "Artist Of The Year," post them here. I've decided not to vote for anyone I'm friends with (online or IRL) or for anything I'm part of (such as rolling country or [info]poptimists).

I've been thinking about production teams; I voted Armato & James this year, thought about voting for Danja and talked about voting for The Clutch. I think Britney and Kelly both deserved artist nods for the general shitstorms that met their (good) albums -- Britney's got the better album but I think I like Kelly more as an artist. Actually, I like Britney more on all fronts. I may or may not have voted for Aly & AJ (don't think I did) but I think you probably should. And Lil' Wayne I voted for in Artist because I couldn't fit him anywhere else. I think you'll be able to include him for "You" and the DeAnda track, tho. (I would have liked to give props to The Carter 3 leak and bits and pieces of Da Drought 3, but both are too inconsistent.)

(I also voted for one online friend for artist, since I think this category should extend to music criticism as well, and mentioned two in my comments.)

You could also vote for that big gorilla drummer doing the Phil Collins song for Artist. He(?) and Crazy Frog should do a charity single.

I ended up voting for Danja and for Armato and James. Also for Brie Larson and, er, I don't remember who else. Oh yes, Britney! And Kelefa Sanneh, who's the best music critic I've ever read at a daily.

My comments were a slight rewrite of yesterday's post about why I chose Blackout over Insomniatic.

Do you know when results go up? Also, did you get an email from the Voice confirming your ballot (in year's past they've sent them, but I haven't yet gotten one this year).

I don't think I got one. IIRC, it took me to a screen that showed what I'd voted for and offered the space to write comments (which I skipped this year).

It may be too late now but the Idolator deadline was extended till midnight EST in case you didn't lock your ballot and have a last minute change.

Thanks, I saw that (though the way they wrote it actually says it was due at midnight yesterday, but I knew what they meant), but I had to finish my ballot anyway since I then went out for the evening. One thing I discovered too late is that whenever I clicked on "hold" the Idolator would software would add a couple of line breaks between paragraphs, and since I clicked "Hold" twice and "Lock" once there are now six line breaks between my paragraphs.

Yeah, that's what I got too. I just always fear something is going to screw up until I see otherwise.
