Kogan, Morley lead blowout UGA booksale!
In an exciting and innovative sales strategy, the University Of Georgia Press is conducting a CREATIVE NONFICTION SALE, to create room in the warehouse, no doubt. Titles include:

--Frank Kogan, Real Punks Don't Wear Black, sale price $6.24
--Paul Morley, Words And Music: A History Of Pop In The Shape Of A City, sale price $6.24

Sale ends 12 noon EST (I think they mean EDT, actually), August 1, 2008. Of course, you might want to act sooner in case supplies run out, though my book will not run out, as it does not have legs.

Real Punks Don't Wear Black will make an excellent stocking stuffer, turkey stuffer, and wedding present.

I think I will actually order your book now! I've felt bad that I haven't before.

Have you read the Morley book?

It's too late now, since they can't justify sending out any more promo copies, but I thought UGA was going to send you a freebie a couple of summers ago.

I haven't read the Morley. It isn't in the Denver Public Library; of course I can get things through interlibrary loan, except that seems to be screwing up these days. I ordered Luc Sante's Kill All Your Darlings and it registered as "Intransit-Sent" for about three months without ever arriving. Now I've got [info]byebyepride's Deconstruction and Democracy in the hamper, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I thought so too! Alas, they never did. I suppose this way you'll at least get a few cents more in royalty payments?

Not sure that any of it will go to me at this point: right now I'm about $350 ahead, in that I got paid on the basis of having sold approximately 1,250 at about a dollar a copy, whereas with so many returns the real number sold so far is only around 900 (I'm not counting hardcover, where I have to sell something like 500 before I start getting any royalties). So getting credited for about a quarter a copy through the sale, the book would have to move something like another 1,400 units before I'd see any pennies pouring in. Obviously this isn't going to happen. But the press has treated me well, so they deserve the money, and a spurt of sales would make them more likely to say yes to any further proposals of mine.

So with my getting credited for about a quarter a copy through the sale, the book would have to...

Just missed the wedding though, it was on Saturday :( (my step-sister's).

Anyway, I figure the book should end up in the hands of a few non-rock-types who have actually been engaging me in conversation on a not-irregular basis. Plus my friend Ian, who is very impressionable who expressed interest in it.

So what's the Morley book about? And is it worth getting?

I don't know (have barely read the guy). Probably.

What I gather (i.e., this is what Mark thinks) is that Morley's is someone who's not really any kind of consistent, coherent thinker but nonetheless has come up with some pretty interesting stances and insights along the way.

I've been meaning to grab a copy and wanted to see if the Morley was worth picking up as well, but apparently no one knows what it's about. I guess I'll err on the side of adventure and hope it's a quality read.
