The go is tight, all because they come to disturb (Top Singles Through Three Quarters 2017)
koganbot
More than 60 already, just tossing things at the end of the list and I'll put 'em in order later. Cameroonian hip-hop continues to kill it. I recommend "Déranger" by Mani Bella ft. Ténor at number 28 as an extreme of cackling and caterwauling and excellent carrying on. (In describing it as such am I misreading it ignorantly from overseas? Google Translate, whatever its facility with standard French, hasn't yet gotten a handle on the Cameroonian hip-hop variant. But "The go is tight, all because they come to disturb" certainly captures the spirit of what I'm hearing. Tight and loose at once.) Kazakh K-pop-derived boyband Ninety One are all elbows on "Su Asty" and it's pretty damn exciting. Miso is all arms and legs on "Pink Lady," as usual. And I finally gave in and placed her "Miso" higher than CLC's "Hobgoblin" in my top ten. (And it's her even-more-bargain-basement-than-usual dance cover of Sunmi's "Gashina" that made me realize that the latter belonged on this list.) Katy Perry surprised me by pulling me in. I tossed off four sentences about it for the Singles Jukebox. Writing it only took me three hours. Celine Dion is on her fourth and fifth singles from what may be her best album (warmest, anyway). The world has mostly stopped caring, but she hasn't.

Here's the ongoing YouTube playlist as of whenever you click on it (size grows and order changes). I hope you give it a spin.

Singles (Don Allred recommends)

Don Allred writes:

I think you suggested that we could send you a list of singles some time or other, for posting or whatever, so, on a late lunch break, here's some of my fave recent tracks:

First, the bad news: Harriet Tubman, the massively succinct jazz-rock power trio (incl. traces of blues, metal, hip-hop, dub--no fusion in the f-word sense, but Miles too, even without the recurrence of Wadada Leo Smith's trumpet on their latest set), does not allow the posting of said set, Araminta, in its entirety, so I can't for instance link "Nina Simone" (eternal vigilance as sonic knives hove all around, as in her dreams [just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't out to get you]. Also they could be part of her armory; she could get pretty militant on concert tapes (for a gateway to the stormy weather of Simone's life and times, incl. controversies over same, see also https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/08/11/raised-voice).

Nor can I link "President Obama's Speech At The Selma Bridge," which will calmly proceed to rattle your windows and shake all your doors (also blow them out, where possible), as Greil Marcus might put it.

However, they do allow a few others, also hot:

In the same vein, here they are with Jackson MS daughter Cassandra Wilson, for "Strange Fruit" (def.seems like a one-off, and not all the words come through, but you know them, the slippery jolt comes through, incl. non-standard use of banjo)

Backstory glimpse of HT herself, via Drunk History:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpTf1GFjCd8

Willie Nelson's "God's Problem Child" was written by Tony Joe White and Jamey Johnson, who also show up on the track, along with Leon Russell (RIP), generating a steady-rolling "Thrill Is Gone"-type vibe & groove, which seems especially appropriate this year, but maybe that's just because this is this year. Title track of a good album, trad on different semi-happy trails, and mostly in the stoically lit zen wake( "I didn't come here and I ain't leavin") of WN's "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die" (also w Johnson, Kristofferson, Snoop Doog singing along)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUBflOTXKsU

Which is not a million-blue miles behind "Can't Stop Shakin'," an unshakeably slippery, black & white microfiche update from young Whitney Rose — true, it's a bit 60s Tex Mex, could believe thee young Sir Douglas Quintet doing it; also, it's just as catchy in its way (apprehensively/professionally spirit level twitch, kind of pre-Talking Heads too)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xyigb0y208

as the equally or also compulsive "Keep On Dancin'" by the Gentrys, in the wake of the real British Invasion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7EIKL37j3g

Despite the what-else-can-you-these-days locked groove of "CSS," Rose is swept away or at least around by the also perfect balancing act of "Three Minute Love Affair," the premise/angle of which may kid her own and her fanbase's classic/retro tendencies, but is also a blissful siren song, in the dance hall sea of possibilities:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVTSnDOTcis

News to me: "The Apple Stretching" and "Nipple To The Bottle" were two sides of the same (7") Grace Jones single!

I haven't heard that, but meanwhile digging this 12" version of "Apple": no gratuitous syn-drum injections etc., and though the vivid detail of Melvin Van Peebles' lyrics goes against the grain of her terse voice, that itself is against the grain anyway, and the rattling density is appropriate to the ever-lurking possibility of urban sensory overload, just like the occasional distortion of this posted copy goes w hectic city etc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4DGr_KV_XU:

Now I want her take on "Desolation Row."

But while waiting for that, "Nipple To The Bottle" seems basically a more monotonous song, despite some good live work-outs and right-thinking extended mixes (not that I've heard nearly all of either). So right now fave is this studio edit — it's a little short, but always leave 'em wanting more (ace visuals too, taking some turns I didn't expect---O Canada!)

Hey Frank – So, in alphabetical order by artists' first names, here are more or less my 40 favorite singles of 2017 so far. (I've accumulated a Napster/Rhapsody playlist with about 300 more singles I kinda like, but can't cut and paste it, and I doubt I’ll ever have time to type it out.) Some of these I learned about from your lists, obviously. When a mix is specified, it's usually because that’s the version I found on Napster. At any rate, if I were to put together a top 10 ballot now, it would almost definitely be 10 of the singles below, and a few others will probably wear down and drop off the list entirely as I hear them more. I’m just not quite sure which ones yet, and hope I eventually have time yet to figure it out. – Chuck

Interesting that the only one we have in common is Katy Perry. We've each got one by Vince Staples and one by Tei Shi but not the same ones. (Who is Tei Shi? Where did I hear of her? Have I even heard "Creep"? --I suppose I can start answering a couple of those questions with several minutes on the Internet.)

Crossposting your list on my dreamwidth, if that's okay. Also, do you have a link to the playlist?

Dave says:

Having trouble posting to LJ for some reason, but here's the playlist (still working on it), designed in roughly 10-song "mixes."
